Jenkins

Caretaker of the Annex. Revealed as Galahad, former Knight of the Round Table. Has worked at the Library longer than anyone can remember.

Quick Information

  • Full name: Jenkins
  • Aliases: Galahad (1x10) / Galeas (1x07 and 2x08) / Galath (Arthurian legend)
  • Family:
    • Father: Lancelot du Lac (aka Dulaque) (1x10 and Arthurian legend)
    • Mother: Elaine of Corbenic (Arthurian legend)
    • Grandfather: King Ban (10x4 and Arthurian legend)
  • Born: 472 AD (Arthurian legend)
According to Thomas Mallory's 'Le Morte d'Arthur', Galahad was 15 when he arrived at Camelot. The date is given as, "Four hundred winters and four and fifty accomplished after the passion of our Lord Jesu Christ." Christ's Passion generally being taken as 33AD would make 454 years after that 487AD when Galahad came to Camelot, meaning Jenkins was born in 472AD and was 1543 years old when we first met him.
  • Role: Caretaker
  • Status: Alive
  • Skills:
    • Immortal (semi) (2x05 & 2x06)
    • Extensive knowledge of magic, mythology and science (ongoing)
    • Expert swordsman (1x10)
    • Can read Egyptian hieroglyphics (1x10)
    • Likes to experiment on and retask some of the artifacts (1x03)
    • No one knows the Library better than him (2x02)
    • Field medic (knows how to mend broken bones) (2x06)
    • Immune to most magic (John Rogers interview) Although Morgan le Fay was able to use magic to choke him (1x07) and Prospero's spell did temporarily alter his memories (2x09)
    • Gives good pep talks (ongoing)
  • Character Traits:
    • At first he appears to prefer to be alone and doesn't work well in a team, although this changes when Ezekiel Jones confronts him (1x05 and ongoing)
    • Sarcastic (ongoing)
    • Fearless and woud give up his immortality to save the Library (2x05)
    • Protective of the Librarians and Guardian (often inspite of his own 'Librarians die' warnings) (ongoing, specifically 1x09, 1x10, 2x04, 2x06, 2x07)
    • Abhores boredom (John Rogers interview)
  • Previous Occupations:
    • Knight of the Round Table (1x10, 2x02)
  • Trivia:
    • Although Flynn Carsen knew nothing of him, he knew all about Flynn when they first met (1x02)
    • Claims to prefer Charlene over Judson (1x02)
    • Knows Santa and Mrs Claus (1x04)
    • We don't know much about what happened to him since the fall of Camelot. We do know he chose a side in a war (presumably the one involving Lancelot and/or the Serpent Brotherhood) and eventually gave up fighting when, inspite of all the killing, nothing changed. That was when he came to the Library (1x05)
    • He and Lancalot went their seperate ways a thousand years ago (1x05)
    • Has a long, and seemingly hostile, history with Morgan le Fay (1x07)
    • Has a hostile relationship with his father, Lancelot (aka Dulaque) (1x05 and 1x10)
    • Claims to have done things, seen things and been places he shouldn't have, hasn't clarified what those were though (2x03)
    • Agrees with Cassandra that they may need to rethink the way the Library handles the magic it contains, because now magic is loose in the world again and simply locking artifacts away is no longer working (2x04)
    • Has always considered himself to be more of a caretaker than anything else (2x06)
    • The reason for his immortality isn't yet known, neither are the limits on it (ongoing)
    • Has in his past been tortured (and threatened, bullied, bothered, grilled and menaced) (2x02)
    • Doesn't like fairies (2x08)
    • It's implied that he and Gretchen Claus had a relationship at some point while Santa was away at Oktoberfest. Although this could have been part of the alternate Happy Ever After life Prospero had constructed, it was mentioned after it appeared Jenkins had got his real memories back (2x09)
    • Although he didn't want Camelot bringing back (1x10), but he does miss Arthur (2x10)
    • Eve is also his Guardian (2x10)
    • Lives in the Annex (John Rogers interview)
    • According to legend, Galahad was conceived when his mother, Elaine, used magic to trick Lancelot into believing she was his lover, Guinevere (King Arthur's wife). When Lancelot discovered he'd been tricked he threatened to kill Elaine but spared on learning she was with child. Most versions of the legend have Galahad being raised by a great aunt (who was a nun) and a knight. HIs mother's fate isn't specified in most versions and young Galahad didn't meet his father until he was 15, when the knight who helped raise him took him to Camelot where he was knighted by Lancelot.
  • Quotes:
    • "You're his Guardian, that means more than merely keeping him alive, it means keeping him in one piece both mentally and physically." - (1x02)
    • "Librarians exist to keep magic out of the wrong hands. Their job is to be in harm's way. " - (1x03)
    • "Did you come to take them away? I keep their bags packed." - (1x05)
    • " I did choose, once... I chose a side in a very complicated... I chose. No good came of it. And over the years I chose again and again, each time little hope, lots of blood and nothing really changed... I finally learned my lesson. And I came here, just to do my work, alone. Because... why choose? Nothing...oh God...nothing ever changes. " - (1x05)
    • " I adore these. It's like a minature appartment building. And when you ht the right numbers, the occupant of your choice leaps to his death and becomes your snack. " - (1x06)
    • "Magic is not an exact science. If it were, it would be science." - (1x09)
    • "Wild magic. Cruel kings. Mad wizards. Yes, it was a pip!" - (1x10)
    • "They have earned the right to rule themselves. The time of kings has passed." - (1x10)
    • "I usually resist playing this card, well, at least in supernatural circles... Do you know who I am? <snip> I've been threatened, tortured, and bullied, bothered, grilled, menaced long since before you two were even a glimmer in your writers' ink pot." - (2x02)
    • " Well, I'm... I'm... Excuse me, I'll go and take care of my desperately not wanting to be here. " - (2x02)
    • "I've always considered myself more of a caretaker than anything else, even in the old days. Even in the old, old days." (2x06)
    • "Colonel Baird, I think you may be laboring under a slight misapprehension. A Guardian's job is not to protect the Librarian's body. We used to go through Librarians like penny candy.
Librarians die. But there is a much greater risk. To be surrounded by all of this magic, to know that you could change things, that you could fix things and not succumb to that temptation, well... not very many good people can bear that burden alone. <snip> They will not survive in this world without someone there holding them steady. I told you once, the Library did not choose you for your ability to kill. The Guardian's job is not to save the Librarians' bodies. It is to save their souls. And you did that admirably today, Colonel." (2x06)
    • "I have never seen anything move that quickly. Except that night Gretchen and I heard Santa come home early from Oktoberfest." - (2x09)
    • "You know, the legend states that when England is in its hour of greatest need, Arthur will return. "He who wielded Excalibur before shall wield it again, and save all England." The idea of seeing my friend again, after all this time... But Arthur is long dead. And, as Colonel Baird said, we are on our own." - (2x10)
